Ag Science I - A101 - (AG I) (2 Terms) This introductory course provides an opportunity for students to learn how the agricultural industry is organized. Its major components; the economic influence of agriculture at state, national, and international levels; and the scope and types of job opportunities in the agricultural field. Basic concepts in animal science, FFA leadership, agribusiness management, and beginning skills in construction, including the use of power and hand tools, carpentry, and concrete construction, are introduced. Class Level: 9-12 Ag Science II - A201 - (AGII) (2 Terms) This second year course presents basic concepts of production applications not introduced in Ag Science I. Major units of instruction include soil science; conservation of natural resources; surveying; forestry; feeding and managing beef; swine, sheep, dairy, and poultry; livestock and dairy selection; meat grading and identification; and milk, cheese, and dairy products evaluation. Applied math/science skills are stressed throughout the course. Class Level: 10-12 Ag Supply and Service - A301 - (AGIII) (2 Terms) This course is designed to develop student knowledge and skills in the area of agribusiness organization using the hands on technology and management skills developed through the FFA Corn and Soybean Variety plots. Crop production techniques including weed and pest control, chemicals, fertilizers, and cultural practices for corn and soybeans are studied. Another goal of this course is to increase student knowledge and skills in appropriate agricultural product and service areas by developing needed background understanding and performances in small engine power, metal fabrication (welding), and electrical wiring, motors, and controls. Emphasis will be placed on math and science skills. Class Level: 11-12 Agriculture Power, Machinery, and Equipment - A404 - (AG IV) (2 Terms) This capstone course is designed to develop a student's skills in advanced agricultural mechanics offering hands on experience which will develop his understanding and performance in the repair, maintenance, and adjustment of agriculture power, machinery, and equipment. Tractors, combines, sprayers, planters, drills, tillage equipment, and machinery management will be studied. Another goal of this course is to increase student knowledge and skills in appropriate agricultural product and service areas. Applied math and science skills will be stressed. Students may receive three hours of college credit at Joliet Junior College if they successfully complete this course with a grade of 86%. Students must take this course as well as Construction/Electricity and Welding to qualify. Class Level: 12 AGRICULTURE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT - A302 (1 term) This course is a study of new developments in agriculture. Major emphasis is on planning, cropping, and livestock systems for a problem farm. Machinery needs, labor distribution and farmstead plans are determined. This is an excellent course for students going to college to pursue a career in agriculture. Students may receive three hours of college credit at Joliet Junior College if they successfully complete this course with a grade of 86%. Class Level: 12 AGRICULTURE ECONOMICS - A302 (1 term) This course is designed to develop student skills in the areas of economics with special emphasis on agriculture. Students will develop performance skills and an understanding of financial analysis, budgets, cost analysis, cash flow, marketing, investment analysis, credit, insurance, taxes, business organization, agriculture law, the farm problem, and international trade. Basic economic concepts will be stressed. While learning about the economics of agriculture, students will develop a greater understanding of their rural heritage. Students may receive three hours of college credit at Joliet Junior College if they successfully complete this course with a grade of 86%. Class Level: 12 LARGE AND SMALL ANIMAL CARE (1 term) This class is designed to instruct students in the areas of feeding, caring, and selection of dairy, beef, sheep, and horses. Training and caring for dogs and cats will also be covered. Importance of the animal industry will be reviewed. (This class in not for students enrolled in AG I and AG II. This course is designed for the nontraditional agriculture student.) Class Level: 10-12 Horticulture (1 term) The Horticulture course will include: identification, evaluation, potting, propagation, and caring of houseplants, flowers and vegetables; care of trees, shrubs, and grass in lawns, golf courses and athletic fields; landscaping homes and buildings; and design and construction of a terrarium. Class Level: 10-12 AG RESOURCES (1 term) Ag Resources is a study of wildlife habitats, hunting, trapping, fishing, forests, prairies, soils, pond management, and conservation of natural resources. Development of habitat will also be covered. Students will earn certification in hunter safety and trapper education. Class Level: 10-12 SMALL ENGINES (1 term) The student will develop an understanding and performance skills in the operation, maintenance, adjustment repair, and overhaul of two and four cycle single cylinder engines. Math and science skills will be stressed. Class Level: 9-12 CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICITY (1 term) The student will develop an understanding and performance skills in the basic principles and applications of wiring switches and receptacles in branch circuits, electric motors, and electric controls. Agriculture structures develop skills necessary for carpentry construction including surveying, bill of materials, parts of structures, marking rafters, laying concrete block, roofing, reading blueprints, and plumbing. Math and science skills will be stressed. Students may receive three hours of college credit at Joliet Junior College if they successfully complete this course with a grade of 86%. Students must take this course as well as Ag Power and Equipment and Welding to qualify for this credit. Class Level: 9-12 WELDING (1 term) The student will develop an understanding and performance skills in arc, acetylene, MIG and TIG welding; hot metal, cold metal, and toll maintenance. Emphasis will be placed on math and science skills. Students may receive three hours of college credit at Joliet Junior College if they successfully complete this course with a grade of 86%. Students must take this course as well as Ag Power and Equipment and Construction Electricity to qualify for this credit. Class level: 9-12 GREENHOUSE MANAGEMENT (1 term) Components of plant growth, pest diagnosis and control, crop nutrition and fertility, as well as growing, care, and maintenance of greenhouse crops will be studied. Greenhouse crops will be raised and marketed through the school greenhouse. Flower arranging will also be done. Prerequisite: Horticulture LANDSCAPING (1 term) This course is designed to develop students' skills in landscaping design and planning with a hands-on approach with a site project. Students will develop skills in drawing and designing landscape plans, transplanting and maintaining plants, interior plantscaping, concrete and patio construction, construction of benches and decks, identification of landscape plants, and operating a landscape business. Prerequisite: Horticulture LIVE ANIMAL AND MEATS EVALUATION (1 term) This course provides a study of the relationship between form and function in the evaluation of beef, dairy, swine, and sheep.
