001 English I (two terms)
English I includes listening, speaking, and other communications skills.
It also includes an introduction to various forms of literature: modern
drama, novels and novels as short stories, and an expansion of communications
skills in the area of developing sentences, paragraphs, and short compositions.

002 English II (two terms)
English II emphasizes various forms of literature: short stories, poetry,
drama (including Shakespeare, modern, and Greek), prose, and the literary terms
necessary to the study of literature. The second emphasis is on written
and oral communications, including well-written sentences, paragraphs,
compositions, and an oral research report.

003 English III (two terms)
English III emphasizes an historical development of the literature of our
country from the 1500's to the present. Authors and works representative
of each period will be studied. Types of literature will include short
stories, novels, poetry, drama, and non-fiction. The second emphasis is on
general expository writing. The well-written sentence, the process of
writing, and the types of paragraphs will be studied. The writing of
compositions, paraphrases, and summaries will also be included, as will the
study of the correct use of the English language and the use of figurative
language.

004 English Literature (one
term)
English Literature is an historical survey of the literature of England from
Beowulf to the Romantic Period. Students will examine the history of the
English language, along with the authors and works of each period, including
essays, poetry, and drama. Through writing, students will apply techniques
of literary analysis and criticism. This course is recommended for college
prep seniors.

005 Advanced Composition
(one term)
Advanced composition encourages students to develop individual writing styles by
practicing a number of strategies throughout the writing process. In a workshop
lab setting, students engage in personal writing, analytical writing, and
rhetorical analysis. The course emphasizes the critical thinking skills needed
to complete a formal research project. Throughout the term, students will
compile a portfolio of their work. Word processing skills are highly
recommended. This course is recommended for college prep seniors.

010 Novels/Short Stories
(one term)
As a community of readers, students will read, discuss, and evaluate significant
novels and a number of short stories, both classic and modern. Students
will be invited to look closely at their own reading and thinking processes as
they engage in whole class, small group, and individual activities. A
portion of the class will include self-directed reading.

012 Speech I (one term)
Speech is a course recommended for both college-bound and non-college bound
students. The course will deal with the development of good communication
skills with emphasis on listening and public speaking. Frequent speeches
of various kinds will be expected of each student.

013 Advanced Speech (one
term)
Advanced speech is recommended for those students who wish to continue their
speech training. Emphasis will be placed on advanced speech techniques,
interpersonal communication, and oral interpretation of dramatic selections.

014 Creative Writing (one
term)
In a creative writing workshop setting, each student is expected to develop his
or her personal writing style. In order to refine creative writing skills,
students will experiment with a number of writing techniques. Working
individually and in groups, students will write in several forms, including
poetry, non-fiction, and short stories. Students may also investigate
other genres of writing as part of individual projects. Throughout the
course, students will complete a portfolio of their work. Word processing
skills are highly recommended.

015 Advanced Placement
English (two terms)
This Advanced Placement program offers instruction in English literature and
composition intended to represent freshman English courses commonly offered in
colleges and universities. This course will provide intellectually
mature and academically curious students with instruction intended to prepare
them to take Advanced Placement exams for college credit. Students who
enroll must be willing to devote the energy necessary to complete a rigorous and
demanding course of study. Class activities will include comprehension
exercises, thematic and rhetorical analysis of works in all literary genres, in
and out of class writing, and research of authoritative sources.

022 English I, II, III C
(two terms)
This class will place its emphasis on practical English skills for learning,
work, and recreation, as well as other areas. The class will include
practical letter writing and functional reading skills.

311 Spanish I (two terms)
The aim of this course is to provide students with a basis for learning a
foreign language as it is spoken and written today. Emphasis is given to
developing the student's basic language skills, listening comprehension,
speaking, reading, and writing. Aural and oral proficiency is
stressed. A second aim is to increase the student's awareness and
understanding of the people and culture of the target language. Evaluation
is based upon communicative competence--written and oral--and objective testing
in content areas.

321 Spanish II (two terms)
This course, a continuation of the first-year program, provides students with an
in-depth explanation of language structure. Listening, writing, and

331 Spanish III (two terms)
This course is directed at developing the student's communicative skills.
The students review major principles and learn fine points of structure.
Students develop the necessary skills for reading in the target language.

competence--written and oral--and objective testing in content areas.

341 Spanish IV (two terms)
Communication and grammar are emphasized through the culture, literature, and
history of the target population. Evaluation is based upon written and
oral communicative competence, as well as objective testing in content
areas. This course looks ahead to the possibility of students continuing
their language education at a post-secondary level.

351 French I (two terms)
Students with strong language skills who put forth a solid academic effort will
learn basic French. Emphasis is placed on grammar, speaking, writing,
reading, and listening comprehension.

352 French II (two terms)
French II is a continuation of French I but at a faster pace. The material
covered is more complex and builds on basic grammar covered in French I.
The student who makes a concerted effort will develop a limited ability to
converse, read and write in French.

353 French III (two terms)
French III is a continuation of skills acquired in French II. The emphasis
is still on grammar, speaking, writing, reading, and listening
comprehension; however, the material covered is more complex. French
literature will be introduced and more writing will be expected. Only the
serious French student should enroll in this course.
