 Portfolio Guidelines  

  The purpose of this course is to prepare you for college-level writing assignments. As part of the requirements for this course, you should practice with skills in the following areas:

Rhetorical Knowledge

Focus on a specific purpose

Anticipate the needs of different kinds of readers

Recognize the differences among kinds of writing situations

Use the conventions of format, organization, and language appropriate to specific writing situations.

General Reading and Thinking Skills

Use writing to record, explore, organize, and communicate

Find, evaluate, analyze, and synthesize appropriate primary and/or secondary sources in order to meet the demands of different writing situations

Understand the general relationships among language, knowledge, and power

Engage in reflective thinking

Processes

Use strategies such as brainstorming, outlining, and focused free-writing in all stages of the writing process, appropriate to the specific writing situation

Create multiple drafts to improve texts

Use effective individual and collaborative strategies to investigate, write, revise, and edit

Exercise efficient time-management principles in completing assignments

Conventions

Control general conventions of spelling, grammar, and punctuation expected in standard written English

Document primary and secondary sources appropriately

Understand that different conventions are appropriate for different types of rhetorical situations.
