Marching Band

Marching band season officially kicks off with band camp in the summer, usually around the last week of July / first week of August. This is not to discount the hard work put in all summer long by the drumline, pit and color guard who usually put in at least one practice a week, and by the band members who have been practicing their music! Plans for the marching band show, however, begin in the spring, when everyone including incoming Freshman (8th graders) signs the papers to commit to marching band for the next school year so that the music and show can be written for the correct number of band members. Participation in marching band is required for all band members, and, yes, even for students in football and cheerleading and scholastic bowl and other school organizations!

Practices for marching band are held during 1st block on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with the Thursday practice beginning at 7:00am.

After performing at half-time at home football games, and competing at several Saturday competitions in September and October, the season usually culminates with the Marching Band Festival at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, including a tailgate cookout for the band members and their families!

Once every four years, the marching band travels to Florida to march in a parade and attend a band workshop in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! This is one of the highlights of every band member's high school experience! Usually about a week-long trip, the band (and choir) take tour buses down to Orlando, spend some time at Walt Disney World and some time at the beach, and ride the buses home again! This trip is usually planned for early June. Other trips may be planned at the director's discretion and with adequate student participation.

Concert Band

During marching band season, some students are also working on their All-District audition music. Band students are given the opportunity to audition for IMEA All-District Band. Auditions are on Columbus Day, but music is given out during the summer or at the start of the school year. Please talk to your director if you are interested in auditioning. If selected, this is a great experience! Selected students will spend a Saturday in November (usually the Saturday before Thanksgiving) at Bone Student Center at ISU in Bloomington-Normal, rehearsing and attending workshops, and will perform a concert in the afternoon. This concert is open to the public, so invite parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends!

After marching band season is over, band practices are held during 1st block on Tuesdays and Thursdays and alternating Fridays.

The concert band performs a Christmas concert, a spring concert in March, and Pops Concert in May. IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest is optional and is in March and IHSA Organizational contest is held in April and requires attendance of all members. The concert band then performs at the graduation ceremony to finish off the year.

Pep Band

FREE ADMISSION to the basketball games! Pep band participation is mandatory for all band members. While every band member is encouraged to attend the pep band performances, usually the performances are divided up between band members ahead of time -- not everyone has to be at every pep band performance. Pep band "season" usually lasts from November through February, and covers about 12 games. Practices for pep band are during band 1st block.

Arrive in the band room around 6:30pm. Pep band plays before the varsity game, and at half-time. Band members are then free to go, or stay and support your school and cheer for your team in the 2nd half!

Jazz Band

Participation in Jazz Band is optional, but members must be committed to attending all practices and performances. Practices are outside of school hours, and start sometime in December or January.

Jazz Band students are given the opportunity to audition for IMEA All-District Jazz Band in October. Auditions are on Columbus Day, but music is given out during the summer or at the start of the school year. Please talk to your director if you are interested in auditioning. If selected, this is a great experience! Selected students will spend a Saturday in November (usually the first Saturday) at the All-District Jazz Festival, rehearsing and attending workshops, and will perform a concert in the afternoon. This concert is open to the public, so invite parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends!

Jazz Band 1 practices twice a week, usually one evening practice and one 7am practice, and will attend at least one jazz band festival, and have several performances, including the Jazz Show in March and Pops Concert in May.

Jazz Band 2 practices once a week, usually at 7am, and may or may not attend a festival, and will perform at the Jazz Show in March and at the Pops Concert in May.

Pit Band

Pit Band plays the music for the spring musical put on by the choir. Participation in Pit Band is optional, but members must be committed to attending all practices and performances. Practices are set depending on the school and musical rehearsal schedule. The last couple of weeks before the musical performances, rehearsals will be at the same time as the musical cast. Performances will be the same days as the spring musical, usually around the first weekend in May.

Concert Choir

Concert choir meets Mondays and Wednesdays during 1st block, and every other Friday after marching band season is over. Choir members perform a fall choir concert, at the Christmas concert, a spring choir concert, and again at Pops Concert in May. IHSA Solo and Ensemble is optional and is held in March, and IHSA Organizational is in May and requires all choir members' attendance.

Choir members are given the opportunity to audition for IMEA All-District Choir in October.

Concert choir participates in the once-every-four-years summer band and choir trip, usually to Orlando to perform at Walt Disney World, and take part in a choir workshop! Tour buses take the choir (and band) members down, and besides performing and participating in a workshop, choir members get to hang out at Walt Disney World, and spend some time on the beach! Other performance trips may be considered at the director's discretion and with enough student interest.

Treble Choir

Treble choir meets on choir days (Mondays, Wednesdays and alternating Fridays after marching band season) during 2nd block.

The Treble Choir performs at a fall choir concert, at the Christmas concert, a spring choir concert, and again at Pops Concert in May. IHSA Solo and Ensemble is optional and is held in March.

Madrigals

Madrigals are a performing unaccompanied singing group, complete with period costuming! Madrigal music dates back to the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and includes the Baroque and early Rennaissance periods. Students audition for this group in late fall, and then practice about twice a week. Many performances are scheduled in area communities for community service organizations, religious and other groups. The Madrigals perform in various businesses in Fairbury on the day of the Fairbury Christmas parade, usually the first Saturday in December. Madrigals also perform in the Christmas concert at the high school in December.

If you are interested in booking an appearance of the Madrigals, contact the high school choir director as soon as possible after school resumes in the fall, as their schedule usually fills up quickly and they have limited time for engagements!

Jazz Choir

Jazz Choir is optional and by audition. This group will practice once or twice a week starting mid-winter, and will perform at the high school spring concert, the Jazz Show in March and Pops Concert in May.

Spring Musical

The Spring Musical is usually held the first weekend in May, with tryouts in late winter. Practices are usually after school 3-5 days a week. Any choir member can audition, and must be committed to attending all rehearsals and performances.

Lessons

While our directors are happy to offer lessons to all band and choir students, private study is always encouraged and helps to make our program even stronger. Please contact one of our directors if you would like to know the names of private teachers in the area!

Other Activities

Extra trips may be arranged occasionally in which band and choir members are invited to participate. These are usually at an additional cost and are outside of school hours, and include seeing musicals such as Wicked, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more! The Music Department is excited to offer musical opportunities such as these if there is sufficient student interest.
