Westview Elementary School – May/June 2009 Newsletter

We at Westview Elementary School have as our mission to develop the uniqueness of each child: academically, physically, emotionally, and artistically.  Each child will be provided the opportunity to become a responsible and productive member of society.  This will be achieved through the collaborative efforts of students, parents, staff, and community

            Teacher Appreciation Week- Parents are invited to express their appreciation to the teachers and staff at Westview Elementary School during Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8.  Parents and/or their children may write a note or a card to send to school for their teacher on Wednesday, May 6.

Prairie Central Art Show- On Saturday, May 9th all K-4 students will have artwork on display at the annual Prairie Central Art Show.  Older students from throughout the district will also have work on display.  The art show will be open from 4:00-7:00 PM in the small gym at the high school in Fairbury.  The art show is free to attend.  Please come and see all of the awesome artwork that students have created this year.

Art Camp- The 7th Annual Prairie Central Elementary Art Camp will run from Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12.  There will be three sessions daily (Mon.- Thur.), and the sessions are open to any P.C. student (going into)K-5.  There will also be a tie-dye day on Friday, June 12.  Information will be sent home with all students within the first two weeks of May.  If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Fehr at Westview or Chenoa, or email her at kfehr@prairiecentral.org.

            Kindergarten Orientation/sign Up- Westview Elementary School will host its annual Kindergarten Orientation and Sign Up on Monday, May 11th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Westview Elementary School gym.  All parents of incoming 2009-10 kindergarten students should attend.

            Pint Size Heroes- Westview Elementary School is joining with Chenoa Elementary School and the Upper Elementary School to host and American Red Cross bloodmobile at the Upper Elementary School gym on Monday, May 4 from 1:00-7:00 p.m.  We appreciate your participation and support of this vital program.  If you would like to donate or to help in any way, please call the Westview Elementary School office at 815-692-2623.   

            Market Day- The last Market Day pickup for this school year will be on Tuesday, May 12 between 4:30-5:15 p.m.

            End of Year Calendar-    Unless unforeseen emergencies arise, the end of the year schedule will be as follows:    No school on May 25-  Memorial Day,  June 2-  Last full day of student attendance,   June 3-  No student attendance for  Teacher Institute,   June 4- Report Card Day 8:00 -9:30 a.m.

            Field Trips-    Westview Elementary School students will participate in several field trips throughout the month of May.  These trips are an extension of the regular classroom and are intended to be a part of the students’ learning  experience.  We appreciate the help of parents in chaperoning and supervising these trips.

Games Day-  Westview students will have their annual Games Day on Tuesday, June 2.   Your children should be dressed for active participation in team oriented games throughout the school day.  Gym shoes or running shoes are highly recommended. Please feel free to stop by and observe the many creative things students will do!

Mother’s Day Programs -Kindergarten Mother’s Day programs will be on Friday, May 8th.

            Father’s Day Picnic- Kindergarten Father’s Day Picnic will be on Monday, May 18th in the Westview gym.

Boys and Girls Club Buzz -The summer program at the Club will begin on June 17 and end on August 14.  The cost is $13 per day and the hours are 7:30am to 5:15pm.  Please call to reserve your spot today or stop by the Club to register!  Summer baseball participants please watch for your calls from your coach! Leagues start sometime the first week of May. 

Westview PTO- The Westview PTO would like to extend a special thank you to all parents and staff who helped to make it such a successful year for the PTO.   It takes many people to carry out the work of each committee: Market Day, Campbell's labels, Box Tops, Cook Book, Secret Santa, Cookie Jar, etc.   Whether you ordered from Market Day, baked for the Cookie Jar, donated Box Tops, or served on a committee, it was all appreciated. Our biggest project of the year was the purchase of Smart Boards for our school.  PTO is excited that this cutting edge technology will be available to enhance learning in more and more classrooms.  Thanks for helping make it all possible."
