Happy New Year!  Welcome to the Year 2009!

Westview Elementary School -January 2009 Newsletter

We at Westview Elementary School have as our mission to develop the uniqueness of each child: academically, physically, emotionally, and artistically.  Each child will be provided the opportunity to become a responsible and productive member of society.  This will be achieved through the collaborative efforts of students, parents, staff, and community.

Pint Size Heroes -  Westview Elementary school will participate in the American Red Cross “Pint Size Hero” program in January.  Students will attend several age appropriate assemblies in early January to educate students about the need for blood and the blood giving process.  Students then will be encouraged to recruit adult blood donors for the bloodmobile to be hosted at Westview on Monday, January 26 from 12:00-7:00 p.m.  Our goals are lofty…150 units collected and 25 Double Red Cell Donors.  These goals are a challenge, but WE CAN ACHIEVE THEM.  Westview students, parents, and volunteers will help host the bloodmobile.  If you have any questions, please call Mr. Schramm at 692-2623.

Market Day-  Thanks for your continued support. We had another very successful Market Day in December. The next Market Day pickup will be on Tuesday, January 13 from 4:30-5:15 p.m.

School Begins for a New Year- Prairie Central Schools will begin the year 2009 on Monday, January 5 at their regularly scheduled times.  Let’s get the new year off to a good start!

End of Second Nine Weeks-  The end of the second nine week grading period will be on Friday,  January 9.  Students will receive their report cards on Friday, January 16.

No School-   Monday, January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Spelling Contests-   Westview School will be involved in several area spelling contests.   We will have our Westview Elementary School Spelling Bee competition on Friday, January 23 at 9:00 a.m..    This contest is for fourth graders.  Your child should see his/her classroom teacher for a  sample word list.  Good luck and good spelling are usually produced by good preparation and good effort!

Thanks for the Cookies, Your Help,  and Support-  The cookie committee wishes to give a tremendous thanks to everyone who donated cookies and worked in “The Cookie Jar” booth on Saturday of the Christmas Parade.  Funds raised , about $575, will be used to support Westview student activities.  As we already know, you are great supporters of Westview!!  We couldn’t have done it without you.

Alert Now-Emergency School Closing- Should school need to be closed due to weather conditions or emergencies, we will use the new phone system, Alert Now, to inform parents of school cancellations, closings, or early closings.  This system will call the primary telephone number that parents listed on their child’s registration form to alert parents of school closings.  We look forward to being able to quickly provide information to you so that you can make alternative plans for your child.  In addition to the Alert Now system, we will continue to make information available as we have in the past and encourage you to listen for informational announcements on local and area radio and TV stations listed in the student handbook or check our district website at www.prairiecentral.org .  The decision to close or close early will usually be made with enough time for parents to make arrangements for their children.  It is extremely important that parents instruct their children on what to do when they arrive home early.  Please make sure your children know how to get in and out, or have a friend, neighbor or relative readily available to take them into their home.  Be prepared by having plans made in advance to prevent undue stress on your child.

Preschool Screening-  There will be preschool screening for Prairie Central children on      January 13 and 14 at Chatsworth , February 5 and 6 at Chenoa,  and March 11,  12, and 13 at Westview.  This screening is for preschoolers  aged 3-5 years old and for children birth though 3 years old.  Preschool screening is necessary for children to be considered for participation in the Prairie Central prekindergarten programs.  Please call the Meadowbrook office (657-8461), Chatsworth office(635-3555),  Westview Elementary School office (692-2623), or Chenoa Elementary School office (945-2971) to schedule an appointment for your child.  You may attend any of the screenings in the distinct.  Call early since time slots fill quickly!
